Courtney, skin and sequins: Grammys 2016 fashion

Music and fashion are inextricably linked thanks to artists like Madonna and David Bowie, who made reinvention a competitive sport.

But while some artists (ahem, Lady Gaga) choose to make a major statement, others – like Australia’s own Courtney Barnett – prefer to let their personalities do the talking.

Why we need to start ignoring fashion ‘trends’

Barnett turned up to the Grammys, her first big American awards show, in black jeans, an unironed black shirt and scruffy RM Williams boots.

Although she looked decidedly out of place among all the embellished gowns, tuxedos and cleavage, Barnett was our best dressed pick for the night.

Special mention also goes to Adelaide outfit Tame Impala, who also managed to resist the urge to go all out on the red carpet.

Sometimes being yourself is the biggest risk you can take.

Here’s what we thought of the rest of the attendees.

Gary Clark Jr and Nicole Trunfio: In the spirit of classic musician-model pairings like Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, or Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, this ridiculously good looking couple have the “too cool to give a damn” look down pat. Clark, a Texan guitarist and singer, stayed true to this stage style, while Australian-born Trunfio was a particular standout in her spangled Zuhair Murad jumpsuit. The couple, who have a one-year-old son named Zion together, are engaged, so expect great things from their wedding.

Lady Gaga: Sure, Lady Gaga’s Bowie-inspired tuxedo gown was not exactly conventional, but it made all the right kinds of statements. Designed by Marc Jacobs, the dramatic embellished dress earned Gaga the nickname “Lady Stardust”. Her fire red hair and blue eyeshadow just served to remind us all that when Lady Gaga dresses up, she commits to the theme. We’re thankful she ditched those shoes for her rousing tribute performance though.

Elle KingThis rising star chose the right route for her debut Grammys appearance: all-out Hollywood glamour. Her frothy Christian Siriano frock was fun and had enough of a rock’n’roll vibe to work with her many tattoos. Her classic hairdo and cat-eye make-up kept the throwback feel alive.

Florence Welch: No one but Florence Welch could pull off this floaty, ethereal Gucci gown. The Florence and the Machine frontwoman kept hair and make-up minimal to allow the fairytale elements of her dress to shine through – just like a rock’n’roll Cinderella.

ellie goulding

Ellie Goulding: Another lady who opted for pale pink on the red carpet was British songstress Ellie Goulding, who kept it simple in a slinky Stella McCartney number. The glitzy fringing at the back and a few well-chosen pieces of silver jewellery ensured the gown had enough glitz to make it Grammys appropriate.

Dencia: If, like us, you hadn’t heard of Dencia before today, you’re unlikely to forget her now. Wearing what is possibly the most visually offensive onesie in existence, the singer clearly wasn’t looking to fly under the radar. We’re really not sure what was worse: the Hello Kitty dolls stapled to her legs or the placement of those rhinestone angel wings.

Taylor Swift: Oh, Tay Tay. While those colours are exceptional, there is far too much happening in this two-piece get-up than there needs to be. Thanks to the full skirt, exposed tummy and leg-baring split, this Atelier Versace outfit looked more Malibu Barbie than pop music icon. In her defence, Swift’s make-up is flawless as always. She could, however, do without the Anna Wintour hair.

Carrie Underwood: Although undeniably gorgeous, country music star Carrie Underwood did herself no favours with this dated, over-the-top gown. The frilly cups are awkward, the silhouette is dated and her hair and jewellery make her look as though she’s come straight from the set of Dynasty.

Tove Lo: The dress alone would have been bad enough, but unfortunately this Swedish stunner decided to top it off with a huge statement nose ring and bizarre pink eyeshadow. Tove, no.

manika

Manika: This American singer might have gotten lost on her way to a Vegas show. That can be the only explanation for what possessed her to leave the house wearing what is essentially an ill-fitting chandelier.
