McLean was released on a AUD$14,000 bail and a court date was set for February 22.
The singer lives with his wife Patrisha McLean and two children Jackie and Wyatt. The alleged victim or victims of the domestic violence charge was not disclosed.
Don McLean gained fame with his 1971 hit ‘American Pie’, which documented the deaths of musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson in a 1959 plane crash.
McLean’s song popularised the phrase “the day the music died” in reference to their deaths.
Almost a decade after its release, McLean admitted the song was also part autobiographical – charting his life in the 1950s and 1960s.
In 2015, McLean sold the original manuscript to ‘American Pie’ for AUD$1.7million at a Christies auction.
The 70-year old is understood to have recently performed at a local lobster festival in Maine.
The singer has not commented on his arrest.
