Fox Studios’ superhero reboot Fantastic Four failed dismally at its first weekend in American cinemas.
With disastrous reviews and a tweet from the director slamming his own movie, the blockbuster film looked destined for failure once it hit the screens.

However, the film bombed so badly some critics have questioned just how viable the superhero reboot genre will be into the future.

Fox hoped the film would build itself big enough to rival the “X-Men” juggernaut, according to the Huffington Post.
However, given it only made a reported $US26.2 million at 3,995 American cinemas over the weekend, those wishes might not be realised.
The production budget of Fantastic Four was $US120 million, plus millions more in marketing costs.
Analysts predicted the film would gross somewhere in the region of $US40 million to $US50 million on its first weekend, so the $US26.2 million result was particularly surprising.
Up and coming actors, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller, star in the film directed by Josh Trank.
It is understood Mr Trank exhibited bizarre behaviour during filming that reportedly lost him his role directing a Star Wars spinoff.
Despite the poor results, The Hollywood Reporter writes that Fox is still committing to more Fantastic Four instalments.
“While we’re disappointed, we remain committed to these characters and we have a lot to look forward to in our Marvel universe,” said Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson.
There is speculation that the Fantastic Four characters might be incorporated into other Fox superhero films in the future.
