‘Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup’: 1D parody goes viral
A music video parody by comedienne Amy Schumer highlighting the double standards of One Direction song What Makes You Beautiful has inspired women a wave of ‘no make-up selfies’ around the world.
Schumer, who is emerging as one of 2015’s breakout comedy stars, made fun of the premise of the One Direction song for featuring only petite, conventionally-beautiful girls in the video clip, despite the lyrical content about natural beauty.

In her own spoof called “Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup”, Schumer is surrounded by a quartet of young boy-band figures telling her to ditch her makeup.
“You’re perfect when you wake up,” they croon.
“Just walk around like that all day. Wipe that goop off your face.”
The video is almost identical to One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful, which was a huge hit for the English boy, but was questioned for implying a girl’s low self-esteem made her beautiful.
“Don’t need makeup to cover up. Being the way that you are is enough,” the lyrics state.
“You don’t know you’re beautiful. That’s what makes you beautiful.”
When 33-year-old Schumer removes her makeup in the parody clip, the boy-banders react in horror and tell her to put it back on.
“Hold up, girl, we spoke too soon with this whole no-makeup tune.”
“You’ll be the hottest girl in the nation, with just a touch of foundation.”
Schemer then encouraged her 1.1 million Twitter followers to post make-up free photos of themselves with the hashtag #girlyoudontneedmakeup.
The response was overwhelming, with girls (and guys) tweeting photos of themselves doing anything from trekking in a jungle to doing taekwondo – all without makeup.
Schumer said she had been moved to tears by the response.
“I have been brought to tears with all the strong, badass, incredible women tonight. In jungles, jumping out of planes, holding their babies and mothers hands,” she tweeted.
“All the strong lovely men who tweeted too. We are all different and beautiful. Let’s waste no time stressin bout looks.
“We are sisters and fighters and laughers and happy strong women. Smile at yourself in the mirror girl.”
