A 15-year-old boy has been charged after a stolen SUV crashed and caught fire at Seven Hills in western Sydney early Sunday.

Officers attached to Cumberland Police Area Command were patrolling Goodall Street, Pendle Hill, about 12.05am, when an SUV passed them without headlights.

Police attempted to stop the driver, however the direction was ignored and a pursuit was initiated.

The SUV continued along the Cumberland Highway and onto Old Windsor Road before turning onto Seven Hills Road, allegedly at high speed.

As the vehicle turned onto Abbott Road it hit an electrical box and caught alight with the driver – and sole occupant – running away.

A perimeter was established and a short time later a police dog tracked down a 15-year-old boy who was arrested and taken to Granville Police Station.

The boy has been charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, and drive conveyance taken without consent of owner.

He’s been refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Children’s Court on Sunday.

The SUV was reported stolen from a home in Baulkham Hills last Thursday.
