A surprise episode of the beloved children’s show Bluey left some fans stressed it would be the end.

The Australian TV show has gained quite the audience both here and abroad, among children and adults.

Earlier this month, the 153rd episode of Bluey, titled The Sign, was released.

It brought about a lot of emotions for viewers.

It was extra long at 28 minutes and in it, without giving too much away, the Heelers are grappling with the sale of their home.

The episode would have been a fitting end for the series, which is why people thought Bluey was over, leaving some parents a little distressed.

Then, on Sunday, a surprise episode of Bluey dropped, in Australia and overseas, titled Surprise!.

In the episode, Bluey and Bingo’s dad, Bandit, is overwhelmed when he is asked to play two different games simultaneously with his children, while also watching sport on the TV.

Why the Bluey episode was kept a secret

The surprise episode was really kept under wraps.

Before it was released ABC didn’t even have it listed.

Speaking to The Guardian, the head of children and family at the ABC, Libbie Doherty, said the decision to do so was simply to keep fans thinking.

Bluey’s hallmark charm is that it is always surprising, and we love to do things differently to keep the fans thinking,” she said.

“Our intention was for the fans to wake up to their usual ABC Kids Sunday 8am slot and be blown away by a brand-new episode.”

Amid all the panic that the show was ending, Sam Moor, a producer on the show said Bluey was not ending with The Sign.

“No, it is not the end for Bluey. I’m sure we have many more surprises in store for you,” she told BBC Radio on April 12.

“We have more in store and we are thinking what would be next.”

Surprise end to surprise Bluey episode

So, spoilers for both The Sign and Surprise! are ahead.

The 28-minute episode ended with the Heeler family not moving out of their home after the sale fell through, so they are staying in their now-famous home, much to the relief of audiences.

In the following episode, we see Bingo wanting her dad to play home with her and look after her “children”, by taking them to daycare and helping them fall asleep.

However, Bluey wants to play a surprise-style game, where she hides and Bandit has to find her, or she will shoot him with her toy that spits out balls.

The episode comes to a close after Bandit gives one of Bingo’s “babies”, a tennis ball in a stubby holder, an uplifting speech about the joys of having siblings and being different.

The surprise episode of Bluey was seven minutes long.

Bluey overhears all this and decides to step up and look after the “baby” herself, so her dad can go watch the sport he had been dying to watch all episode.

We then get to see into the future. Bluey comes home to see her parents and we learn they never did move.

“The house is looking good,” Bluey says.

“Thanks! Can you believe dad almost sold it,” her mum, Chilli says, as Bandit shuts the door.

“Are you ever going to let that go?” he asks, as the doorbell chimes, revealing that Bluey now has a child of her own.
